ABOUT

© Paula Agostinho

I was born in 1985 in Lisbon, Portugal.

My work spans from directing, to translating and editing plays and other texts. I have also had experience in educational theatre programming, devising special tours, animating debates and other activities for groups of all ages.

Collaboration is one of my main interests, be it between artists or between disciplines.

What moves me is a desire to explore theatrical forms and acting, to question humanity and bring people together in that quest.

I hold a Degree in Performing Arts from the University of Lisbon. There, I attented classes by Maria Helena Serôdio, Maria João Brilhante, Anabela Mendes and Vera San Payo de Lemos — with whom I would later work as assistant dramaturgist.

In 2007, I finished my degree and started working at Teatro Aberto. I assisted director João Lourenço and dramaturgist Vera San Payo de Lemos during the next 14 years, as well as other directors in the upcoming productions.

I was part of the creative and technical teams that produced texts by authors such as Stephen Sondheim, Tom Stoppard, Dea Loher, Bertolt Brecht, Caryl Churchill, Sofi Oksanen, Neil LaBute, Friedrich Karl Waechter, Yasmina Reza, Arthur Miller, Agustina Bessa-Luís, Lillian Hellman, John Logan, Nick Payne, Florian Zeller, Conor McPerson or David Eldridge, working as assistant director, assistant dramaturgist and stage director for several years. I helped devise the company’s educational service, which I coordenated for 8 years, and became responsable for the company’s archive in 2020.

I directed my first play in 2012: Michel Tremblay’s For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, with actress Sílvia Filipe, with whom I will work again on other plays.

I continue to direct on a regular basis texts I translate and adapt to the stage. Drawn mainly to foreign authors, my work with portuguese poetry is defining of my artistic identity.

Also worth mentioning are the artists and actors with which I colaborates regularly and maintain a strong cumplicity. Among them are set and costume designer Marisa Fernandes, set designer Rui Francisco, costume designer Dino Alves, video director Nuno Neves (within the groove), video director Eduardo Breda, sound editor José Raposo (Sound Station), designer Monica Lameiro and the actors Ana Guiomar, Vítor d’Andrade, Madalena Almeida, Pedro Laginha, Rui Melo, Ana Brandão, Helena Caldeira, Bruno Bernardo, just to name a dear few.

My journey with Teatro Aberto ended in 2022.

In June 2022, under the artistic name Marta Sylos, I joined artists Mei and von Hell, creating the performance MULHER C.ORAÇÃO.

Most recently, I became a founding member of: CASA - Colectivo Artístico.
